Buried amongst all my newer books with perfect spines and unfolded pages is a paperback copy of Sophie’s Tom by Dick King Smith. It’s falling apart and the pages can’t even really be turned anymore without falling free. But despite its disheveled appearance, it remains one of my favourite belongings.

When I was a child it was my favourite book and I read it over and over again – almost able to recite chapters off by heart. I had it on cassette too and I distinctly remember listening to the words while I read along in my increasingly scruffy book. Sophie’s Tom is my first memory of falling in love with a story. I wasn’t just reading about Sophie, I was Sophie, and I felt every emotion she went through while sitting in her potting shed with that little black cat.

I haven’t revisited Sophie for many years, but I’ve since gone on to have so many more adventures. I’ve fallen in love and been broken hearted, gone back in time and visited new worlds, and I’ve even managed to step foot in a mighty Wizarding school.

“So Matilda’s strong young mind continues to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books our into the world like ships in the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message : You are not alone.”

Social media is attracting more bookworms too. Goodreads is an excellent social platform that allows you to plan what you’d like to read, discover news book, track your reading and join online bookclubs. And even Instagram has some fantastic feeds that combine stunning photography with information on latest releases. At the moment I’m on a literature crime spree and I’ve just finished reading Lie To Me by J.T. Ellison, a book I discovered through Abby’s Instagram Feed – Crime by the Book.

What are you reading at the moment? And whats your preference – a physical book, or an e-reader? Let me know in the comments below.

Either way, enjoy your adventures.
